Department of Chemistry
History of the Department of Chemistry
The Department of Chemistry at the Faculty of Education, Logar University, was initially established as the “Department of Chemistry and Biology.” Its establishment and approval were based on Proposal No. (575), dated 13/12/1392, issued by the Ministry of Higher Education, and Decree No. (1200), dated 20/2/1393, issued by the former administration. In 1393, approximately 80 students were admitted to the dual-subject programs of the department, followed by 112 students in 1394.
With the expansion of academic and educational activities at Logar University, the need to separate and specialize the departments of natural sciences became increasingly evident. Accordingly, the proposal to separate the “Mathematics-Physics” and “Chemistry-Biology” departments was discussed and reviewed at the Academic Board of the General Directorate of Academic Affairs Coordination on 8/4/1394. As a result, in accordance with Order No. 114 dated 9/4/1394, these departments were divided into four independent departments: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Consequently, the Department of Chemistry has continued its academic and educational activities as an independent department since 1395.
Since becoming an independent department, the Department of Chemistry has focused on theoretical and practical education, enhancing students’ scientific and professional competencies, and strengthening research activities, with the aim of preparing competent and committed professionals. To date, the department has graduated nine cohorts of dedicated and professionally trained students and continues to serve as an active academic department of Logar University, striving to enhance the quality of education and further develop its academic and research activities.

Outcome of the Periodic Review of the Academic Program of the Department of Chemistry – year 1399
As part of the systematic evaluation of academic programs and within the framework of quality assurance and continuous improvement, the academic program of the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Education, Logar University, underwent a periodic review in 1399 (2020/21). The review was conducted by the designated Periodic Review Panel and covered various aspects of the academic program, including the quality of teaching, students’ academic progress, graduate employment, the views of students and graduates, academic staff capacity, educational and physical resources, academic and research activities, and other relevant academic, administrative, and educational functions of the department.
The findings of the review indicated that the Department of Chemistry had undertaken a range of significant activities and demonstrated positive practices across different academic and educational areas. These included the development and publication of the department’s vision and mission, preparation of a five-year strategic plan, alignment of course contents with the curriculum approved by the Ministry of Higher Education, appointment of academic advisors for students, continued attention to teaching quality, and the adoption of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) and Student-Centered Learning (SCL) approaches. The academic and research activities of faculty members, their active participation in university academic and administrative committees and programs, engagement in academic and professional workshops, and the organization of processes related to student monograph supervision and defense were also recognized among the department’s positive practices.
Student academic progress and progression were also reviewed. According to the information documented in the periodic review report, approximately 90 percent of the students in the Department of Chemistry successfully continued their studies and progressed to higher semesters. Furthermore, in 1399, 46 students graduated from the Department of Chemistry and successfully defended their monographs.
Graduate employment and continuation of higher education were among the other important areas examined during the review. The information provided indicated that a significant proportion of Chemistry graduates were employed in schools, teacher-training institutions, institutes, educational organizations, and other public and private institutions in relevant fields, while some graduates continued their education at higher academic levels. The department also maintained communication with its graduates, and their views and professional experiences were taken into consideration in efforts to improve departmental activities. The Periodic Review Panel positively assessed the academic and professional capacity of the graduates and emphasized the need for continued efforts to further increase their employment rate.
The quality of teaching and students’ feedback were also examined, resulting in the identification of both strengths and areas for further improvement. The evaluation findings reflected a considerable level of student satisfaction with the teaching competence of academic staff, educational materials, and academic discipline. At the same time, the review identified the need to further strengthen student-centered teaching approaches, update educational resources, and make more effective use of technology in the teaching process. In response, the department has taken students’ feedback into consideration and incorporated the improvement of teaching practices into its planning and subsequent activities.
The review also identified needs related to human resources and educational facilities. Considering the volume of teaching activities and the number of courses delivered by the department and across other academic programs, strengthening academic staff capacity and creating opportunities for the recruitment of additional academic staff were among the key recommendations of the Periodic Review Panel. The panel also emphasized the importance of improving educational facilities, academic resources, and the physical conditions required for the effective delivery of educational activities.
Following the completion of the periodic review, the report on the periodic review of the academic programs, including the report of the Department of Chemistry, was submitted to the Ministry of Higher Education and subsequently reviewed and analyzed by the Ministry’s Directorate of Quality Assurance and Accreditation. After reviewing the report, the Ministry identified several areas requiring improvement; however, it approved the periodic review report and confirmed the continuation of the academic activities of the Department of Chemistry. In its official correspondence, the Ministry emphasized the need to address the identified areas for improvement and to implement the observations and recommendations of the Periodic Review Panel at the program, faculty, and university levels. This confirms that the overall findings of the periodic review were accepted by the Ministry and that the Department of Chemistry was authorized to continue its academic and educational activities while addressing the identified areas for improvement.
The corrective areas identified by the Ministry included the systematic completion and reporting of information and evidence concerning student progress, graduate employment, students’ and graduates’ feedback, human and educational resources, as well as the preparation of an operational plan to address identified deficiencies and weaknesses. These areas have been considered within the broader quality assurance and continuous improvement process. The Department of Chemistry has likewise incorporated the relevant observations and recommendations into its subsequent planning and activities as part of its commitment to continuous quality improvement.
In conclusion, the 1399 periodic review constituted a formal and substantive evaluation of the academic program of the Department of Chemistry. Its findings were endorsed both by the Periodic Review Panel and at the level of the Ministry of Higher Education, and the continuation of the department’s academic activities was confirmed. The review provided an important basis for identifying strengths, recognizing areas requiring further development, and establishing priorities for continuous improvement in the department’s academic, educational, and administrative activities.
Building on this outcome and taking the recommendations and observations into consideration, the Department of Chemistry remains committed to continuous quality improvement, strengthening academic and research activities, enhancing the capacity of academic staff, improving educational resources and facilities, and giving greater attention to the needs and feedback of students and graduates.
